OUR SEAWEED
We supply three grades of seaweed, along a scale of sustainable production methods. All our seaweed is clearly identified by grade.
Traditional: By far the most common way seaweed is grown in the Philippines, traditional farming practices pass down through generations in existing seaweed cultivation regions.
This method requires minimum upfront capital but uses materials that generate non-biodegradable waste after each planting cycle.
The Coast 4C farmer engagement cycle starts here. We commit to purchasing crops while leveraging the direct relationships we form with farmers to nurture a pipeline for conversion to regenerative methods.
Transitional: We grade seaweed produced by farmers who have received our GROW seaweed farming start-up packages as “transitional”.
Grounded in behaviour-change theory and comprising a combination of waste minimising materials, the packages provide improved seedlings, farming technologies suited to a range of sites by water depth, and farm management support to enable farmers to implement Good Agronomical Practices on-farm and post-harvest.
Transitional seaweed is traceable to the individual farm where it was produced.
Regenerative: The highest grade of seaweed under Coast 4C's definition is “regenerative”, encompassing the characteristics of “transitional” seaweed, with the added assurance of production within an ideal Marine Protected Area (iMPA).
iMPA is Coast 4C’s proprietary model for increasing the size and effectiveness of community-based marine protected areas, which integrate zones for regenerative seaweed farming, sustainable fishing and habitat restoration.
Regenerative seaweed is traceable to the individual farm and the iMPA where it was produced.
We support our farmers so our buyers receive superior quality.
Coast 4C is the supply chain solution for discerning global brands committed to sourcing high-quality, traceable, and sustainable seaweed.
We shorten the supply chain and increase efficiencies for our buyers.
Key to the improved value chain we provide is the experience and capacity that Coast 4C has in building relationships, networking and working with smallholder seaweed farmers over a large and growing number of communities to drive behaviour changes and outcomes across the triple bottom line of people, planet and profit.
Our ongoing commitment to converting as many farmers as we can to regenerative farming practices fulfils a critical gap in the value chain. We recognise that more of our buyers are aligning their purchasing decisions with sustainability and integrity. For regenerative seaweed buyers who demand the highest assurance of ethically sourced seaweed, we implement rigorous quality control mechanisms and provide training for farmers to meet the necessary social and environmental conditions.
All of these activities and improvements are made possible as a result of the expertise available to Coast 4C through our team, and partnerships and collaborations with organisations at the leading edge of innovation in this space.
